Artist’s Biography:
Naomi Samarasekera is a Sri Lankan American artist based in Cleveland, Ohio. She’s currently a junior at the Cleveland Institute of Art and is expected to graduate in 2025 with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Illustration and a minor in Creative Writing.
Artistic Statement:
My head is constantly a mess of colors and ideas that simply explode onto the paper when I put them down. I love controlled chaos, so I always put as much of myself into my pieces as I can. This results in my compositions being busy and filled with bright hues. Scatters of sparkles, flowers, and clouds in my environments are commonplace in my art, as they create a fantastical, dream-like, experience for the viewer. At the same time, I love logic and research. Many of my pieces have roots in mythology and science. I try to relate to cultural backgrounds in my mission to convey a message and ground the viewer. I work towards my artistic skill growing to the point where my art won’t just be about aesthetics, but towards telling stories and moving the hearts of their viewers.
